Frequently Asked Questions

What are the shipping charges?

Shipping charges are determined by the cart subtotal:

$9.95 shipping for orders up to $99

$19.95 shipping for orders between $100 and $199

$29.95 shipping for orders between $200 and $299

FREE shipping for orders over $300

Shipping is charged only to recoup the actual typical costs of packaging materials and shipping costs. Forest Hills Woodworking has access to discounted shipping rates through USPS, UPS, and FedEx. These discounted rates were used to determine the shipping charges.

Some businesses offer free shipping on all orders by building the cost of shipping into their product pricing. Forest Hills Woodworking doesn’t take that approach because it would result in customers paying higher prices even when no shipping is involved (local pickup).

Local pickup

Some products are available only for local pickup. Due to their size, these items would typically require freight shipping. Custom estimates can be provided is shipping if requested for these items. If any product in an order requires local pickup, then the entire order will be for local pickup. If shipping is requested for a portion of the order, please note that during checkout and a custom shipping estimate can be provided. The pickup location will be provided via email after the order is placed.

What types of wood do you use?

I use primarily domestic hardwoods, such as walnut, cherry, maple, and poplar. I also use exotic hardwoods, such as padauk and purple heart, for their unique appearance.

For more rustic or farmhouse pieces I often use pine, spruce, or fir.

For products with wood choices, how do I choose?

Wood choices for cutting boards, trivets, pizza peels, etc. is a matter of aesthetic preference. All hardwoods offered are dense and resilient. Walnut is typically medium to dark brown but may include lighter variations. Maple is typically a cream to light brown and is the lightest of the choices. Cherry is more variable but typically medium brown, darker than maple and with more yellow or red hues. Padauk is a beautiful rich burnt orange color. Purpleheart may also be available and is a beautiful deep purple.

What types of finishes do you use?

I primarily use finishes that highlight the natural beauty of the wood. I use only the highest quality finishes to get the perfect look and level of protection. I use natural oils to bring out the grain and color of hardwoods. I use hard-wax oils for the same effect, with even greater protection for tables and benches. I use high-quality water-based polyurethane for surfaces that may be subject to the most demanding use. I use only food-safe finishes, like pure tung oil or my own combination of mineral oil and beeswax, on any pieces that may come into contact with food, like charcuterie boards and cutting boards.  Where stains or paints are chosen, which is common with pine, spruce, or fir, I use only the highest quality water-based stains, primers, and paints.

What types of tools do you use?

I use a combination of hand tools and power tools. Milling lumber to the right dimensions typically involves power tools. I use traditional hand tools, such as chisels, planes, pull saws, and sanding blocks to get things just right and ensure the highest quality finished pieces.

Transform your living spaces with the warmth, character, and timeless beauty of handcrafted furniture and décor.
